Our History

Kay-Billie-Klaer is named after Kay Ensworth, Billie Philbrick, and Betty Klaer-Miles who befriended and supported its founders, Awo and Akrofi Dzietror. They met the couple in 1981 when they travelled to Ithaca, NY and Akrofi was working toward a PhD in Agronomy at Cornell University and Awo enrolled in a child development program at Tompkins Cortland Community College.

The School was started by Dr. Akrofi Dzietror and the Late Mrs. Awo Dzietror. The Late Awo Dzietror was a trained Early Childhood Educationist. She held a Diploma in General Agriculture from the Universtiy of Ghana, and Associate of Applied Science Degree in Human Services, with Child Care concentration, from the The State University of New York at Tompkins Cortland Community College, Dryden, New York. She also trained and worked for 3 years as a Nursing Assistant at the Oak Hill Manor Nursing Home, Ithaca, New York. Mrs. Dzietror also had a certificate in Basic First Aid. Mrs. Dzietror opened and managed for 4 years the University of Ghana Staff Day Care Centre for the University staff. She also acted briefly as a consultant to Ghana National Commission on Children on establishment of day care centers. The Late Mrs. Dzietror had had ten years’ working experience with children in the U.S.A. and Ghana before the opening of Kay-Billie-Klaer Academy. Dr. Dzietror, now on voluntary early-retirement from the University of Ghana, holds a Ph.D. in Agronomy from Cornell University, USA, and brings to KBK 16 years intimate knowledge of the foundational weaknesses of the learning difficulties faced by, undergraduates and graduate students at the University of Ghana, weaknesses that have their genesis during the Nursery, Primary and JHS years.

The school has an infant school, two years of Nursery, two years of Kindergarten, six years of Primary, and three years of Junior High School. The school now has an enrolment of over 500 students and employs a total staff of 80.
